Mediation Dorset
Providing high quality conflict resolution services and training

Young Mediators Project

Why a young mediators project?

Many of the disputes that come to us for mediation have grown from minor incidents. It is important for young people to learn from an early age how to prevent healthy disagreements from becoming damaging conflicts.

Can young people safely deal with each others' problems?

Children and young people make excellent mediators. They have a strong sense of fairness and justice. When they are helped to develop conflict resolution skills and are trusted to use them they are caring and responsible. Problems that need different handling are referred to staff.

Who are the Mediation Dorset trainers?

Those who take charge of workshops are practising mediators. In addition, all our Young Mediators Project trainers are fully trained in this work and have undergone statutory CRB checks.

How is this done?

Since 1994, we have been training Dorset school pupils in listening skills and using language which would not make problems worse. They have also learnt how to value and respect themselves and others. Some schools have chosen to take this further and have a Peer Mediation Scheme where trained pupils, supported by trained staff, use the mediation process to sort out some of the problems that arise in the playground or classroom.

Is it only for Schools?

No - we are able to offer courses to young people outside the school setting. Our courses are adaptable from ages 5 to adult.
